Bass Crash

According to the conservation group Stripers Forever, the North Atlantic population of striped bass is in dramatic decline and the group is asking all its members—and fly fishers everywhere—to write to Paul Diodati, director of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, asking him to reduce the recreational and commercial striped bass fishing quota in that state by 50 percent.

The “action alert” issued by the group was spawned by new data from the Atlantic States Marine Fishery Commission showing a “66 percent decline in the estimated recreational catch from 2006 to 2009; a 25 percent decline in estimated striped bass abundance from 2004 to 2008; and lowered recruitment in recent years.” According to Stripers Forever, the newly released 2006 to 2009 numbers are already out of date as fish populations have continued to plummet. If only there were a forum where loyal Fly Fisherman readers could discuss this crisis.

Well…..a population crash certainly needs to be addressed….and….moratoriums on fishing….especially fishing for recreation….certainly need to be initiated…..but what….pray tell…..is the actual cause of the population crashes? I'm not asking to formulate opinion on what is justified or not….but it seems to me that the real reason/cause for the crash is what actually needs to be determined and addressed……not the commercial or recfeational issues!

  • Rodney

I mean….ya know….if the crash is due to something other than commercial or recreational overfishing…..well….writing somebody to call a moratorium on such things…..deals with the problem in a superficial and most likely beneficial way….but at the same time….wouldn't effectively focus attention where it's actually needed!

I've always found myself wishing for more thoroughness in articles and news….it's necessity….including to eliminate the suspicion of bias to be sure….but for far more important reasons than that!

    WHY THE CRASH?

You could support the bill to make stripers a game fish.

    Rodney,

The striped bass population is suffering because of many reasons. Here in the Chesapeake Bay it is estimated that 75% of the juvenile population (fish 1-3 yrs old) have contracted a disease known as mycobacteriosis. This is fatal. The dead zones as a result of agricultural run off are driving fish out of cool summer time haunts into stressful warm shallow waters. Couple this with the fact that the menhaden population is being severely depleted the bass have no place to live or eat.

    Give Stripers games fish status.
