Korkers Chrome Kling-On

The new Chrome boot uses a Boa Lacing System similar to the Korkers Guide boot discontinued last year, but the rest of the boot has been improved, most noticeably the upgrade to the interchangeable sole system. On the Guide boot, the switch-in soles were slender inserts that slid inside a permanent outsole. The problem was that the outside edge of this system had no contact with the river bottom, and the “traction” portion of the sole was narrow and therefore less stable than a wider boot. This problem is resolved in the new Chrome boot because the upgraded Omnitrax 3.0 interchangeable soles are much wider and cover the entire bottom of the boot. The soles are secured with tab inserts and a stretchy rubber heel strap. Our tester reported no problems with the soles staying on. “The quick-drain ports and all-waterproof materials keep the boots feeling light, and they are easy to clean and dry,” he said. You cannot add off-brand studs to these soles, but the Chrome Kling-On comes with two sets of rubber soles, one with studs and one without. $200 www.korkers.com

    I've had these boots for a couple months (darkness version). I do love them but they aren't perfect. The coverage of the new soles and the new attachment design is a vast improvement. I did have a sole detach on my last trip (mucky bottom carp wading) where it was tough conditions for detachable soles and I'm still not sure I had attached them fully as I did swap out my felts for vibram in the parking lot.

    I do like the BOA system but I'm getting more and more doubtful about the lacing guide system. The tubes within the sleeves sometimes move more freely within their sleeves then the wires within the tubes. This causes the tubes to move out of their mounts and the wire to bind and not tighten evenly. I contacted Korkers and they suggested gluing the tubes in place. I need to try different glue as the results aren't 100%. The Simms BOA design looks like a better solution but fixed soles are not on my agenda.

    In short I like the BOA system and the new soles but folks need to realize both of these features come with new maintenance and attention to detail issues. IMHO a reasonable trade off for the positive aspects of the features.

    The lightness on these boots cannot be overstated.
