New for 2011, Patagonia’s ecofriendly boot is made of a synthetic leather upper, sticky rubber sole, polypropylene insole, glued rubber rand, and a nylon/Spandex/Neoprene tongue. The all-synthetic composition makes the boot durable, quick drying, and easy to clean. Our tester noticed the wide footbed immediately. He normally wears a size 11 but was able to squeeze into a size 10 due to the extra space allotted to a Neoprene bootie. The boots come with a package of 23 studs, and identifiable stud receptacles, but our tester wore them without the extra safety net, and had no problems on gravel-bottom Western streams. “The tread is a smart design with great contact points on the balls of your feet and an aggressive outside tread that gives you a wide base of balance,” he said. $180 www.patagonia.com

    Gravel is easy. How do they do on ROCK?! Bring them to Western North Carolina and try them out.

    I'm all for the new Eco-Friendly designs but from everyone I've talked to these struggle on mossy rocks. Until we can find a viable alternative to felt, it's very difficult to convince me to spend $180 on a hopeful replacement that may get me wet.

      Put studs on them and they don't struggle. Rubber soles with studs beat felt soles every time. You're right though. Plain felt beats plain rubber for river-bottom traction. Plain felt is terrible our of the river though and not very durable. Every walk on fresh snow with felt? Or along a sloped muddy riverbank? Because felt has no tread, it has very poor traction out of the river.
