A Tribute To Lefty

I was recently at the International Fly Tackle Dealer Show in New Orleans where I had the chance to see all the latest and greatest gizmos and gadgets from hundreds of different vendors. Amidst the gloss, chrome, and mile-high photographs that go along with trade conventions, the thing that caught my eye was a watercolor portrait of Lefty Kreh on display at the Temple Fork Outfitters booth. Lefty is my hero. No other way to put it really.

When I was a teenager and wanted to learn to fly fish on my local water (the Bow River) Lefty Kreh’s video showed me how. When I later became a guide—and wanted to learn how to be a better teacher and instructor—Lefty’s videos showed me how to do that as well. He’s also taken the time on countless occasions to teach me and tens of thousands of other people not only how to be better fly fishers, but how to have more fun doing it. Lefty has been a Fly Fisherman contributing editor for far longer than I’ve been around—at least 30 years—and nobody captivates a crowd at a consumer sporting show than Lefty.

I’ve seen thousands of photos of Lefty, and many of them are excellent.  But this painting really is more than a snapshot in time. It’s a fitting tribute for a man that has spent a lifetime helping so many others.

The watercolor portrait of Bernard “Lefty” Kreh was done by Monica Acee, of Deansboro, New York (monicaacee.com). From her web site: “Her artwork has graced the covers of several magazines, and has appeared in many publications, including the book The Best of Portrait Painting. Her portraits have been included in news stories on CNN, NBC’s Today Show and other television shows. One of her equine paintings was featured on the 1997 Hampton Classic Horse Show poster and was the first to sell out during the week of the show. She was among a select few invited to display her work alongside the paintings of Andrew Wyeth and Philip Pearlstein in the “Face of America” – an exhibition devoted to outstanding portraits in watercolor. Her paintings grace numerous collections both domestically and abroad, including those of super-model Christie Brinkley, William Bristol III of Bristol-Myers Squibb, and the American Embassy in London, England. Monica is currently accepting commissions from her studio in Upstate New York.”

Why is he called "lefty" when he fishes right handed.

    • John Fiorini

He is ambidextrous. He cast primarily left-handed until he injured his left shoulder maybe 10 years ago. If you've never seen him cast, you've missed an astonishing performance. I have seen him throw 90 feet of line on his knees.

  • Dave Begley

As a member of the Michigan Fly Fishing Club we were fortunate to have Lefty Kreh as one of feature as one of our feature demonstrators and lecturers. He is not only a great ambassador for the sport he seems to be a nice guy and fun to be around.

One of the finest men and anglers I've ever known!

Many years ago I spent a day learning from Lefty… I learned more in one day with him than most weeks with a guide or fising. But the most memorable thing about the day was his story about getting Jimmy Dean to land a salmon in Alaska for the American Sportsman TV show

I own and frequently review all of his books.

Oh, by the way, he is an *amazing* caster and teacher

    Lefty is the best!

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated

    –Ernest Hemingway.

    And now, Lefty?

    Dear Fly Fisherman,

I read your "Tribute to Lefty" on the headline of your email announcement and assumed, "On, no, our Shidoshi dojo master has passed and I learn of it via email? I am a shameful student."

I need to get out more often with the Old Guard I have forsaken in my selfish redfish angling at home. B. Lefty K. and J. Chico F. certified me F.F.F. Instructor back in 1994 in the first year of the program.

Lefty used my 790 RPL for demonstration DESPITE his having recently broken a few ribs, which must be allowed to knit of their own accord with no surgical support He still showed up to the conclave in San Antone, in severe pain, to further the pursuit of fly fishing and the peace it fosters to the next generation, and the next… Lefty's a true man's man.

Wishing him many more years of happy angling, and Godspeed,

student Jim Doggett, class of March, 1994

      Jim,
The painting is a "tribute" to a great man who is alive and well.

      • http://rcfightersforfreedom@blogspot.com Jim Doggett

That was my point, dear ed! The "tribute to…." announcements alarm us when they refer to someone up there in seniority of time served on earth. I hope no one else has suffered a shock.

        Great magazine, and fight on!

        Jimbo.

    Beautiful painting !!

Many years ago I was watching Flip Pallots tv series "Walkers Cay Chronicles" . His guest was Lefty Kreh and they were fishing for Smallmouth Bass using Leftys cork poppers. I wanted to try and make some of Leftys poppers and sent him a fax asking if I could purchase some from him. Within a few days I received a package with two poppers and a typed letter from Lefty. He gave a brief message on making the poppers and said he was off to S.C. striper fishing. He wished me luck but did not want payment for the poppers.

I would have gladly paid Lefty but that is what kind of gentleman he is.

    God Bless you Lefty !!

I had the chance to spend a day with Lefty in April of this year. I drove to his house, picked him up and drove him back to Philadelphia to spend a day with the Main Line Fly Tyers. He gave a casting clinic in the afternoon and a lecture in the evening. I have to say it was one of the most memorable days of my life. He is a personable, witty and down to earth man. His knowledge of fly fishing is encyclopedic. He is a great teacher.

I wish him good health and happiness in the future.

Whoops, I too saw "Tribute" and had a stomach flop until I read the whole article. So glad he continues to walk among us. What a guy – his "little books" are true treasures. How he finds time to write, fish, teach, etc., is beyond me but maybe that's what keeps him the young stud at heart that he truly is! Lefty for King.

I agree with Wanda, you can learn the elements to make your cast more efficient but Lefty's legacy is how to treat your fellow man! he is called Lefty since he is quoted as saying" would you want to spend your life being called Bur-Nard? He's one of a kind….a true legend and treasure!

  • Rick Brown

As told to me by Lefty: He is naturally left handed but he tore his left biceps muscle away from the bone while flipping a mattress for his wife. He can cast with either hand but his left just gives out quickly. My favorite Leftyism is;''share your knowledge, don't put it on display.''

  • Jan Smith

The word "Tribute" scared me. As I'm sure it did others. My response was one of a child that thought she'd lost another hero way too soon. I've watched him teach old & young with such grace & charm that could only be developed by decades of practce & performance. Listen to him well review his videos often, there is always something new to take with you. Some day we will lose this gifted man.

Lefty knew my Dad working at The Miami Herald and agreed to take my engagement photo for the paper in 1971 before I was an angler. After becoming one with my husband, he's always been generous with his time to meet us at the Sportsman's Expo in Denver and give me some casting tips or answer my email questions. He is so down-to-earth, energetic, and FUNNY! I love that he's not wound up in the latest and greatest gadgets, but more "make your own simply." Lefty always has encouraged women to be involved in the sport. He's not only a wealth of knowledge, but a kind and generous human being. Awesome painting!
