Breaking News: Native Fish Society Files Suit Against NMFS and ODFW

by John Larison   |  March 13th, 2012 0

The Native Fish Society filed suit this week in federal court against the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, arguing that the agencies are failing to protect wild salmon and steelhead on Oregon’s Sandy River, just thirty minutes from Portland.  In short, NFS argues that the agencies are, knowingly, putting hatchery fish into the river at the expense of wild fish.

The Native Fish Society threatened such litigation 11 months earlier, but the agencies have failed–according to NFS–to entact meaningful changes to the hatchery program, changes necessary to stop the downward spiral of the Sandy’s once plentiful and diverse native salmon and steelhead stocks.
