Cicada Soup | The Backing Mondo

Emery's Backing
Mondo Cicada
David Siegfried Photo

Hook: #4 Dai-Riki 710.
Thread: Black 3/0 danville waxed monocord.
Underbody: Black 1/8" foam cut into 1/8" strip.
Body: Black 1/4" foam cut into 1/2" strip.
Tail: Orange 1/8" foam cut into a 3/16" strip.
Rib: orange fly-line backing colored with black permanent marker.
Legs: Orange Sili Legs with black barring.
Wing: Orange deer hair and black Krystal Flash.
indicator: White poly yarn.

Step 1. Attach the thread to the hook. Cut a tapered point on a strip of orange foam and secure it to the hook allowing 1/8" of black thread to show underneath. Tie in orange fly-line backing for ribbing. I like to keep this material on a spool and use it with a bobbin. Secure a strip of 1/8" think black foam in front of the orange foam.

Step 2. Wrap the thread toward the hook eye until 2/3 of the shank is covered. Wrap the black foam strip toward the eye and tie off at the same point. This will serve as the underbody taper. Taper the end of a 1/4" thick strip of black foam. Secure the strip where the underbody stops so the tapered tip is just short of the orange tip on the tail.

Step 3. Wrap over the body toward the tail and back with loose wraps. Then for a base of thread on the hook shank between the eye and body. Next, secure the foam up to the hook eye with tight wraps. Wrap the backing forward to form the rib and tie off.

Step 4. Color the sides and back of the ribbing with a black permanent marker, and allow it to dry. Glue the thread and backing to the foam body with Super Glue. Stack and tie in orange deer hair so the tips extend to the orange tail. Tie in 15-20 strands of black Krysstal Flash and trim so they extend as far as the deer hair. Secure white poly yarn for an indicator.

Step 5. Add two sets of Sili Legs per side and trim so the front legs are about 1/2" long and the back legs are slightly longer. Pull back the extra foam from the front and secure at the 2/3 point to create the head of the fly. Whip finish and trim the extra foam flush with the top of the head.
