A quick look at some new gear for 2004. Check our the rest of the new gear for 2004 (new rods, reels, lines, and waders) from manufacturers like G. Loomis, Sage, Orvis, Winston, Rio, Cortland, and Scientific Anglers in the February 2004 issue of FLY FISHERMAN.

Orvis | Royal Wulff | Marryat | Gilmore | Cortland | Simms | Patagonia | Rafters | Redington | Bailey's | JW Outfitters | C&F Designs | Chota | Fishpond | Columbia | Loon | Creek Company

ORVIS
Orvis has re-introduced its CFO reel--which has been around in one form or another since 1874. The new 2004 CFO is machined aluminum with radial holes around the outside rim (double check this, have not seen actual reel) for reduced weight. It comes in a bronze/brown anodized matte finish with champagne colored accessory parts like the reel foot and counterweight. The new reel has no plastic parts like its immediate predecessor. The internal components of the disc drag are all metal and the Delrin handle has been replaced by rosewood. Even the sound has been changed by increasing the number of teeth on the sprocket for a reel that purrs with a little more enthusiasm. The new CFO is available for line weights 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6 for $235-$255. For more information visit
www.orvis.com or call (800) 548-9548.

ROYAL WULFF
The limited-edition Hardy Bougle' Mark IV reel ($375) from Royal Wulff Products is a great complement to any bamboo fly rod. Only 100 of these classically-styled trout reels are being produced and each is engraved with Lee Wulff's signature. Designed as Hardy's first and only raised-pillar reel, the Bougle' is machined from aluminum, has an adjustable drag, weighs 4 3/4 ounces, and has a pearl-silver anodized finish. Spools can hold 75 yards of 30-pound GSP backing with a 3-, 4-, or 5-weight triangle taper line and can be converted from right- to left-hand retrieve. For more information visit
www.royalwulff.com or call (845) 439-4060.

MARRYAT
Winner of the "Best in Show" at the EFFTEX trade show in Nuremberg, Germany, earlier this year, the new CMR-Online fly reel ($) from Marryat is an anti-reverse reel with two separate drag systems. A standard drag is located on the reel housing and used like any other drag, turning it tightens and loosens the drag on the reel spool, though the settings are slightly lighter than a normal freshwater reel. A second drag system is incorporated on the reel handle and an angler can apply more drag by simply squeezing the two buttons on the handle. The drag on the handle allows you to control how much or how little drag you need when fighting fish without letting go of the handle. By knowing when to squeeze the buttons, you can also prevent fish from tiring on long runs and increase their chances of survival after release. Made from bar stock aluminum, each reel weighs 5 ounces, can hold up to 220 yards of 20-pound backing with a weight-forward 7-weight line, and is available in gun metal, black, or gold finishes. For more information visit
www.anglersportgroup.com or call (585) 757-9958.

GILMORE
Gilmore designed their reels and spools to be modular, you can exchange a conventional spool for a large arbor spool without switching reel housings. The new X400 ($449) was created to convert from an 8-weight large arbor to a 10-weight standard spool and like all Gilmore reels, it can be configured as either a direct-drive or anit-reverse with the aid of a conversion kit. The reel is made from machined aluminum, anodized, and has a dual-disc drag that applies pressure on both sides of the spool. The standard spool holds 325 yards of 20-pound test while the large arbor spool holds 200 yards of 20-pound backing. For more information visit
www.gilmorereel.com or call (800) 963-9475.

CORTLAND
Cortland Toothy Critter is a nylon-coated stainless steel tippet material you can use for bluefish, pike, and barracuda and tie all your regular fishing knots. You can also buy Toothy Critter in 70-pound and 90-pound breaking strengths for $24.95 (30-foot spool) and the same quantity of 120-pound Toothy Critter for $34.95. For more information visit

SIMMS
For lightweight, packable raingear, the PacLite series pants and jacket are perfect for those who never like to leave their raingear behind on an outing. The PacLite Pullover ($169.95) is made from a waterproof fabric called PacLite 3 and 100 percent nylon ripstop, so it is lightweight, durable, and packable. This jacket has a two-sided chest pocket and adjustable cuffs, waist, and hood. It has a ¾ length front zipper to reduce bulk. The pullover is longer than a standard fishing jacket, which makes it a good rain/wind coat on boatsIt comes in smoke, Pacifica, and brick. The PacLite Pant ($159.95) are made from the same material and have full-length leg zips, elastic ankle cuffs, and articulated knees. It only comes in smoke.

The Windstopper fleece line has been redesigned using new fabrics, design technologies, and new colors. The Windstopper DL Jacket ($199.95) and Vest ($149.95) have two-layer velour fleece for maximum insulation with a DWR finish to shed moisture. They have a Simms fish logo embroidered on the neck and come in brick, slate blue, jasper, and loden. The SL Jacket ($179.95) and Vest ($129.95) have a single-layer velour on the face and a lightweight mesh liner. The mesh knit in the sleeves of the DL and SL jacket help wick moisture to keep you dry and warm. They come in brick, slate blue, jasper, and taupo.

Simms has also expanded their clothing line to include three new shirts: the Dobby Guide Shirt, Vintage Check Guide Shirt, and a more casual T-shirt. The Dobby Guide Shirt ($64.95) has a big weave cotton fabric that ventilates well and comes in coral, sage, slate and is available in S-XXL. PATAGONIA
The Great Divider ($165) gear bag (18.5" x 9" x 11.5") keeps contents dry with its 800-denier double polyurethane coated nylon, radio frequency welded seams. Radio frequency welding is the process of fusing materials together by applying radio frequency energy to the area to be joined. The resulting weld can be as strong as the original materials. The bag has a light exterior color which reflects the heat of the sun to keep photographic equipment from overheating. The bag even doubles as a cooler. Main compartment is made of a pliable high-density foam to protect the bag's contents and can be easily removed fo rcleaning and to fold the bag inside your luggage if you wish. The main compartment used 2 Velcro attached dividers so you can customize the inside of the bag. Also inside are tow clear zippered end pockets for pliers and other accessories that are also attached with Velcro for easy removal. Bag has a removable shoulder strap and fits under airline seats and even in most commuter jet overhead compartments.

Hawaiian Sling ($85) is an over-the-shoulder bag (what Patagonia calls "3-point") that is designed to have the carrying capacity of a small backpack (300 cubin inches) but have the advantage of allowing the angler access to the back contents onstream by spinning the pack around the shoulder. These bags are made from a 12-ounce, 1,680-denier Ballistics nylon with a polyurethane coating. A baffled divider separates the two main compartments and the exterior compartment has a panel of stretch mesh for aeration. Compression straps on the back of the pack are perfect for a light rain jacket. A chest strap pocket is fleece-lined for a cell phone or sunglasses and a small hanging mesh pocket (with key retainer) is accessible from the exterior and is good for your wallet, license, and keys. Guide Raft

RAFTERS
Fishing luggage that floats is the idea behind Rafters tackle bags, and the newest addition to the line--the Guide Raft--can float up to 30 pounds of fishing tackle. As an added bonus, the floatation panels cushion your gear from the impacts of travel. The Guide Raft is waterproof, except the zippers which will leak if you force the bag underwater. Waterproof flaps protect the main compartment zippers from the rain. The bag measures 15"L x 9"W x 11 1/2"H and fits three large Plano boxes with room to spare for reels, cameras, and extra tackle. Price: $150. For more information call rafters at 866-303-6043 or visit

REDINGTON
Redington Sportswear has developed several new product lines under new ownership. Among the most interesting are the Wild Fly Pant($39.95) and Wild Fly Tee ($29.95). If you think ventilated casting shirts with just a few pockets shy of a vest are old school, then the Wild Fly Tee may be for you. The shirt is made from a polyester Dri Block knit that is slightly stretchy and more comfortable than traditional woven fabrics. It comes with a half-zip closure, snap adjustable cuffs and one pocket large enough to hold a small fly box.

For high-exertion activities like mountain biking along your favorite stream or hiking into a high-alpine lake, this shirt helps keep you dry and comfortable--and looks better than a traditional fly-fishing shirt in the bar or restaurant when you get back to civilization.

Wild Fly pants are a 92% polyester 8% Lycra Dri Flex knit that are built to fit more like a pair of your favorite jeans than a baggy pair of fishing pants. According to the manufacturer, the Lycra/polyester blend is tough, wrinkle proof, and bugs cannot bite through it like thinner quick-dry pants. The pants come in sizes S-XXL with a zippered back pocket and side cargo pockets. For more information visit www.redington.com or call (866) 498-7243.
