Sandy Steelhead Tackle

Intro | Year Round Fishing | Equipment | Chinook Salmon | Other Rivers

A long authoritative rod helps you control the line at all ranges. Single-handed rods of ten feet balanced with 8- or 9-weight lines are ideal when you are covering small and medium size water at ranges to 40 feet. Two-handed fly rods for 9- or 10-weight lines give the best control of fly speed at all ranges. Rod lengths of 13 to 15 feet are most popular. Anglers who can cover more water efficiently always win at steelheading.

Although a 45-minute drive from Portland International Airport puts you on the water, the river is wild, and you should be prepared for rough cold-weather angling. The Sandy is a demanding river to wade, even at summer levels. Its water is cold for most of the year, and a dunk can be extremely unpleasant. Proper warm (layered) clothing, a wading staff, and traction devices on your boots can serve you well.

Weather conditions demand that winter anglers pay special attention to how they dress. Not all days spent in search of winter steelhead will be frigid, but some can be. Capilene or Polar Fleece underwear is required, with a layer of each for really cold days. Heavy socks are mandatory. Insulated, thick neoprene waders are a must. A heavy shirt with large breast pockets for carrying gear is handy. A neutral-colored waterproof wading jacket made from breathable material can be the best friend you ever had. Neoprene gloves keep your hands warm and are thin enough to provide the dexterity for casting. Always wear a hat with a bill to shade your polarized glasses. Be prepared for rain any day of the year.
