There's a new player in the domestic fly-rod game–Airlite Fly Rods has announced its US launch after operating in the United Kingdom for over two decades. Backed by industry veterans from Mayfly Outdoors brands (Ross Reels, Abel, Airflo, Dyna-King, and Renzetti), Airlite offers a range of affordable, high-quality fly rods that cater to various fly-fishing styles and skill levels.

"Designing fly rods has been one of my true passions for over 20 years, and few things in the world of fly fishing excite me more than crafting quality rods that elevate the casting experience," stated Jeff Wagner, CEO of Airlite Rods and Mayfly Outdoors. "It was a pleasure to collaborate with our UK team and Gareth Jones, our GM of Airflo and fly line designer, who also brings nearly 20 years of experience in rod development. Together, we refreshed the rod line to bring it to the U.S. market—and beyond."

Airlite's product offerings include six rods, two reels, and a combo kit with options for freshwater, saltwater, dry-fly, nymph, streamer fishing–from mountain streams to saltwater flats to urban ponds. The company emphasizes the rods' design, which includes matte finishes, color-coded reel seats, alignment arrows, cork handles, and machined aluminum reel seats.

I had the opportunity to fish both a Cargo 6-weight and a 5-weight Versa Trout along with a V3 reel. Both rods stood out for their ease of casting and effortless distance. The fast action helped with mending and roll casting, and I appreciated the little arrows to line up the ferrules. The wood-grain reel seat of the Versa was a nice touch. Both rods were accurate, but the Cargo was especially adept at putting streamers tight against the banks as intended.

"We aim to design fly rods so exceptional that casting becomes second nature, where the rod feels like an extension of your arm," Wagner said.

The V3 reel, designed by the pros at Ross, felt sturdy and looks sharp. Its sealed drag system worked as well as any drag system I’ve used for trout fishing and is marketed for both freshwater and saltwater.

The company offers a warranty and customer service program that includes rod section replacements.

Airlite products are available at www.airliteflyrods.com and through select dealers.
