Thundering rainstorms frequently pass overhead in Colorado’s high country where I guide in the summers, unleashing their full torrent as the mountains pierce the storm clouds. Experiencing that with regularity, I appreciate a quality, functional rain jacket, so the new Simms Women’s G3 Guide Jacket suits me just fine.
The 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabric allows it to pack smaller than some of my older, more abused rain jackets, but without losing any features nor waterproofness. The multiple fabrics are strategically placed to maximize mobility, which is critical while I’m hopping boulders up and downstream to land fish.

I’m a stickler for an adjustable hood so I can still see out while watching my clients’ drift, spying the next obstacle certain to snag their fly, or looking around for a moose or bear popping through the willows. And the cuffs magically keep water out so I can raise my arms to celebrate a fish in the net without water pouring down into my sleeves.
While I’m wearing a jacket, it is tough to have access to all my gear, so I appreciate the large front pockets to carry a couple fly boxes (not to mention the glasses cleaner in the left pocket!), the fly patch and hemostat-holder near the top of the left pocket, and micro-fleece lined hand pockets to revitalize my numb hands after the hail subsides. As a bonus, these handwarmer pockets also have zippers to access that interior gear without having to remove the jacket. I say bring it on, mountain storms, bring it on. I just feel sorry if my clients don’t have this jacket.
