Grunden’s Vector Wading Jacket

A fly angler surf fishing in a Grundens wading jacket, with waves splashing up on him.
$350 | grundens.com

The Grundens Vector Wading Jacket is a top choice for anglers who like to fish the fishy conditions (read wind, rain, and cold). It’s made of 100 percent nylon three-layer breathable waterproof shell that beads water well and is comfortable. It has several large pockets for fly boxes, tippets, split shot, and more, and a very adjustable hood. My favorite part is definitely the interior neoprene wrist cuff that grips your wrists well enough to keep the elements out, but not so much that it’s uncomfortable. This clean-cut coat will satisfy any angler.

The Simms Guide Insulated Gloves are a new favorite piece of gear for cold-weather fishing. They feature a durable, water-resistant, and windproof Coated Rino Rip nylon outer shell, and the palm is reinforced with actual goat leather, ensuring a firm grip on wet rods and gear. Their utility goes way beyond fly fishing–these gloves would be fantastic for skiing, snowboarding, sledding, shoveling, snowshoeing, skating, ice fishing, or any other outdoor winter activity. These gloves are specifically designed for the rigors of fly fishing in frigid conditions, just don’t expect to be tying blood knots using 7X in them.

Cigars International Humi-Care Herf-a-Dor

00b-cigars-international
$18.99-$54.99 | cigarsinternational.com

Anglers who enjoy a cigar on the water or around the fire won’t have to worry about the condition of their favorite sticks when they’re protected by the Herf-a-Dor. This airtight, watertight case has a sturdy, reinforced ABS frame that stands up to the hazards of travel and ensures its contents won’t get crushed. Inside is a cushioned foam liner that cradles cigars and prevents them from shifting when the water or road gets rough. A built-in humidification wafer accepts a few drops of distilled water to keep cigars in optimal condition. The dual-latch case is lockable, includes a lanyard and has multiple external points for securing it to a rail, pack or other tie-down point. Available in four sizes, the Herf-a-Dor accommodates from five to 40 cigars up to 54 ring gauge and 8 inches long. Whether your next fly fishing trip involves kayaking the local river or flying to an international hot spot, the Herf-a-Dor will keep cigars in prime shape for celebrating a personal-best catch.

Oru Inlet Sport Collapsible Kayak

A kayaker in an Oru Kayak on a mountain lake.
$1,199 | orukayak.com

For anglers who enjoy hiking into backcountry ponds, consider the Oru Inlet collapsible kayak. The Oru Inlet is an "origami" recreational kayak (as opposed to a whitewater or sea kayak) that amounts to kind of a hybrid between a Water Master and a packraft (if you buy the additional backpack) but without the risk of puncture. For anglers, it's probably best as a stillwater boat since there's no skirt option and it's rated for "calm" water but that doesn’t mean you couldn't use it on moving water, especially if you’re proficient with a kayak. It has available add-ons like an NRS PFD, a rod-holder attachment, the aforementioned backpack, a skeg, float bags, and paddle, which are sold in convenient bundle packages.

Put-together and break down are very quick and easy, especially once you’ve done it a few times. It weighs 23 pounds and can carry 275, with room for extra gear or a small pet in the cockpit. It's rated for 20,000 folds so it's meant to last. This thing is super cool.

Winston Polarized Fishing Sunglasses

Photo of the face of a fly angler wearing R.L. Winston sunglasses, a hat, and a hoody.
$225 | winstonrods.com

R.L. Winston’s new sunglasses are designed for anglers. The leading fly-rod manufacturer’s new offerings feature eight frame options in designs that are a little different from the typical sunglasses found in most fly shops. Their performance, comfort, and stylish design make them a worthy investment for serious anglers.

“One of the best things about these glasses is how they fit on my face and don’t slip off, and they look amazing,” says Montana outfitter McKenna Hulslander.

You can rest assured that the same attention to detail and quality that go into Winston's legendary fly rods has gone into this new entry into the fishing shades space. They'd fit nicely in a stocking.

Abel MLB Reel Series

Studio photos of Abel's MLB collab reels featuring team logos.
$1,750 | abelreels.com

Is the fly angler on your list also a baseball fan? If so, there might be no better gift than an Abel SDF fly reel with their favorite team’s logo emblazoned upon it. There are currently 10 teams available for these officially licensed reels, but more are on the way.

These reels are the latest in a long series of artistic designs that set Abel apart from other fly-fishing companies. Consider fly rods or fly lines—to the naked eye the products are marginally different. The performance differences are often subtle, or perceptible only to experts. Not so with most Abel reels. When you die and your fly-fishing gear is passed along to your grandchildren, the lines will go in the trash, the old rods will be sold in a yard sale, but an Abel reel with your state flag, or Derek DeYoung brook trout design, a Casey Underwood etching, or Grateful Deal Steal Your Face artwork will be kept and cherished forever because it has your stamp on it. It says something about who you are and how your other passions intersect with fly fishing. If you are a New York Yankees fan, this will speak volumes both on the river today and decades from now. I know my AC/DC Super Series 5/6 will be passed along . . . but first there are about a thousand more trout to rock and roll!

Abel also sell their signature nippers with MLB logos.

Beer!

A fly angler casting in the backgroud; a six-pack of Juicy Drama IPA in the foreground.
For the angler who has everything or the angler who is hard to buy for, there’s always beer.

For the angler who has everything or the angler who is hard to buy for, there’s always beer. In an informal study of my fishing friends, 100 percent responded they would appreciate a good beer in their stockings. One of my new favorites is 10 Barrel’s Juicy Drama IPA. It gives plenty of bang for your buck at 9.6 percent ABV and is a zesty, easy-sipping, fruit-forward beverage that chills nicely in an alpine stream or at the campfire.
