Legacy: The Cathy & Barry Beck Story premiered on the Outdoor Channel on Oct. 4 at 6 PM, and airs on Oct. 18 at 6pm EST and Oct. 24 at 10pm EST.
This deleted scene from Joshua Caldwell’s new film Legacy recounts the story behind a best-selling fly-fishing image featuring a rainbow trout rising toward a fly, with guide Tom Harris in the background. The fish, nicknamed Big Red, was notoriously selective and lived in a friend’s pool. To capture the shot, Barry Beck used an underwater camera housing with a dome port, patiently waiting all day for the perfect moment. After many attempts, they secured three usable frames, one of which became iconic. Though many believed the image was Photoshopped, it was entirely authentic and later sold to Field & Stream, whose art director verified its legitimacy. Beck credits timing, patience, and a bit of luck for the success, calling it the most memorable and commercially successful image of his career.
