In a matter of a couple of months, Blane Chocklett caught his personal best striper and then his all-time best redfish on the same fly—his darting, slip-sliding, erratic Jerk Changer. The fly is inspired by jerkbait lures, and it has an action like nothing else in fly fishing. If you want to catch mind-boggling muskies, smallmouths, pike, jacks, or any other predatory species, the Jerk Changer can trigger a crashing response. In this episode Blane explains why it works, how to tie it, and most importantly how to retrieve it for maximum effectiveness.

00:00:00.390 --> 00:00:26.400: It gives you that opportunity to get a better hook set. And visually seeing fish eat, I've noticed over the years that, especially fishing jerk baits and conventional tackle and then translating it into fly design, if you give them that extra second, they'll do that second inhale. Right? And that gives you a much better chance at hitting soft tissue and, and having success with your hook sets.

00:00:26.400 --> 00:00:42.090: You know, what I love about fishing with you is you, you do so many things that are like unconventional. You just like blast conventional fly-fishing wisdom out of, out of the water and catch huge fish doing it. And it's just like, wow. Yeah.

00:00:42.090 --> 00:01:01.320: Well, you know, I, I don't look through keyholes, you know, I've always, I've taken, you know, being blessed and meeting people like Dahlberg that is successful in both sides of it. I mean, you know, it, it, it opens up a whole new world and it makes you understand how fish react in a good way or a bad way.

00:01:11.760 --> 00:01:48.000: Loop to Loop is sponsored by Patagonia, high performing outerwear made responsibly for our planet. G Loomis, American-made fly rods manufactured in Woodland, Washington. Abel Reels proudly designed, machined, anodized, and assembled in the USA. Crafted for Chaos. Renzetti, the Vise of Legends. Airflo, next-gen PVC-free fly lines with new tech, new formulas, and the same obsession.

00:01:48.000 --> 00:02:12.390: Hi, I'm Ross Purnell, editor and publisher of Fly Fisherman magazine. Welcome to Loop to Loop, a program where we make deeper connections with the people behind the magazine. Our guest today, a face from the magazine, Blane Chocklett, fly designer, fly creator, and guiding genius. It's a pleasure to have you up here. Thank you very much, Blane.

00:02:12.390 --> 00:02:39.960: Thanks for having me. Some days you win, some days you lose, right? Yeah, we were just chatting about that rowing series that, that we did over the last couple years and where you show how to row a boat, safety etiquette, stuff like that. That was cool. And that was super fun working on that with you. 'Cause those work days were pretty fun being out in the, in the raft, just chilling, catching smallmouth bass was a good time this summer.

00:02:39.960 --> 00:02:49.680: Yeah, I enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun. And that's actually where you, you know, not leading into it too much, but that's, I think your first time fishing a Jerk Changer...
