Orvis announced two updated fly reels today, introducing a new big‑game model and a redesigned version of its best‑selling workhorse.
New Big‑Game Orvis Fly Reel The Ratio Fly Reel is positioned as Orvis’ most robust saltwater reel to date, built for species that demand high drag strength and long runs. The reel features a fully sealed carbon‑stainless drag system designed to deliver smooth pressure with no startup inertia, along with an oversized indexed drag knob for fine adjustments during fights. Orvis says the reel’s construction and oversized shaft are engineered to withstand heavy loads in both saltwater and freshwater environments. It will be offered in five sizes, including a deep‑spool VI model capable of holding a 14‑weight line and 600 yards of backing.
“The Ratio is built for anglers who target powerful fish in demanding conditions,” says the Orvis literature. “The reel has the strength and durability for tarpon, big roosterfish and permit, as well as bluewater battles with tuna and billfish. They are equally adept at moving big trout in heavy water, steelhead in fast flows or carp hell-bent on leaving town.”

Updated Best‑Selling Hydros Fly Reel $279-$319 | tridentflyfishing.com (Photo courtesy of the Orvis Company) The company is also releasing a redesigned Hydros Fly Reel , maintaining the model’s mid‑price positioning while adding durability and ease‑of‑use upgrades. The new version includes a fully sealed drag system, a 5% larger arbor for faster line pickup, and a tool‑free mechanism for switching retrieve direction. Orvis has also strengthened the handle and improved the drag knob’s ergonomics. The reel will be available in four colors across three sizes.
According to Orvis: “Orvis has strengthened the reel’s already rugged build and fully sealed the drag mechanism, so even with the spool removed, water stays out. The handle is now more durable with an improved grip, and the redesigned drag knob offers better ergonomics—making it easier to adjust, even in the heat of a fight with a big fish.”
