Orvis has announced the release of its newest generation of Recon fly rods, a Vermont‑built series intended to deliver higher durability and refined performance. A press release reports that the updated lineup is 20-percent stronger than the previous Recon generation, a change aimed at anglers who routinely subject their rods to demanding conditions such as backcountry travel, long seasons on the water, and rough handling in boats or roof racks.

The new Recon family includes 13 freshwater and six saltwater models, each built with Helios‑inspired tapers and a mix of standard, intermediate, and high‑modulus graphite. Freshwater models in the 3‑ to 6‑weight range feature more moderate actions, while saltwater and big‑game rods incorporate faster profiles.

All models are four‑piece rods and come with the Orvis 25‑Year Guarantee. Componentry varies by category: saltwater and heavy freshwater rods use all‑black anodized aluminum reel seats, while lighter freshwater models pair anodized hardware with burled wood inserts. Standard snake and stripping guides are used across the lineup.

The Recon series is priced at $698 and is positioned as a mid‑range option for anglers seeking a combination of durability and high‑end performance. Orvis notes that the rods have been tested by guides who spend more than 150 days a year on the water, with applications ranging from euro‑nymphing on trout streams to casting large flies in windy saltwater environments.

The full lineup includes models such as a 10' 3‑weight designed specifically for tight‑line techniques, a versatile 9' 5‑weight for all‑around trout fishing, and an 8'9" 11‑weight built for targeting large fish in confined spaces. Saltwater offerings span 6‑ through 11‑weight rods, all in 9‑foot lengths.

“No unnecessary flair, just relentless go-anywhere versatility, crafted in the USA by anglers who measure success by stories, not likes,” touts Orvis’ product page
