Your gear is everything. You put months of planning into assembling everything you need for specific species and waters. You have tailored your rods and lines and reels to match the anticipated conditions. If the gear doesn’t show up or is damaged en route, it can ruin or at least hinder a dream trip you may have planned for more than a year.

That’s why you need a travel case sized to carry on commercial flights, and one that provides bulletproof protection when it’s thrown in bush planes in Alaska, Cessna Caravans in the jungle, transport ships in Belize, and pickup trucks in Patagonia.

Norfork Expedition Cobalt cases are made in Italy by Negrini, with 40-plus years of firearm case expertise. They are built using double-wall ABS construction, with padded interior compartments to hold rods up to 9'6" long.  For my recent trip to Patagonia, the case held six 5-weight rods and an assortment of trout-sized reels. When I traveled to Brazil and carried 10-weight rods with large stripping guides and fighting butts, four rods was a comfortable fit.

I also use the Norfork Expedition Cobalt to carry other essentials like sunglasses, backup fly lines, extra contact lenses, cash for guide tips, and other essentials I know will be safe inside a locked, bombproof case.

You can also purchase a weatherproof zippered cover for the case ($143) to protect the case from the elements during transport to extremely remote locations. The weatherproof case—shown here on a grass landing strip on the Xingu River—has zippered exterior pockets that are easy to access and perfect for plane tickets and other travel documents.
