A new online resource is shedding light on the environmental costs of salmon farming, challenging industry claims of sustainability with over 300 peer-reviewed studies and reports. Launched by the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) and the North Atlantic Salmon Fund (NASF), the website—salmon.info—aims to inform media professionals, policymakers, and conservationists about the lesser-known impacts of open-net pen salmon farming.

“The salmon farming industry claims to be one of the most sustainable proteins on the planet with minimal environmental impact,” said Neville Crabbe, ASF’s executive director of communications. “Our goal for salmon.info is to provide accurate, accessible information on things the salmon farming industry doesn’t talk about so that consumers who are eating farmed salmon are informed.”

Among the concerns highlighted are the inefficiencies of feed conversion—requiring more than one kilogram of wild-caught fish to produce a single kilogram of farmed salmon—and the premature deaths of tens of millions of farmed fish annually. The site also details the ripple effects on surrounding ecosystems, particularly the threat to wild Atlantic salmon populations.

Key features of salmon.info include:

  • A searchable database of nearly 300 vetted sources on salmon farming impacts
  • An AI-powered assistant to help users navigate the research
  • Plain-language summaries and a user-friendly interface designed for accessibility

The launch underscores ASF and NASF’s shared mission to conserve wild salmon and promote sustainable fisheries. For more information, visit www.salmon.info, www.asf.ca, or www.nasf.is.
