Pebble Mine Could Be Stopped By EPA

The EPA is currently conducting a watershed analysis in the Bristol Bay region to first catalog the unique salmon productivity of the rivers and lakes there, and then consider using Section 404(c) of the Clean Water Act to prohibit industrial mining in the area. The EPA began the watershed analysis after a coalition of more than 500 hunting and fishing organizations asked the federal agency, and the Obama administration, to take action. The draft report is expected in May 2012. At the same time, former Alaska State Senator Rick Halford—a Republican who is proudly pro-business, and an advocate of the mining industry in Alaska—has come out strongly against the mine: "I believe in being able to use the bounty of the Earth, but I don't believe in destroying it with this kind of a proposal.
