Thomas & Thomas Avant II

A Thomas & Thomas Avantt II fly rod superimposed over a mountain/river scene.
$965 | thomasandthomas.com

If the new Avantt II has an inherent purpose, it is certainly to cast dry flies in those sublime moments when trout are rising or otherwise visually located.

The 9-foot 5-weight model is feathery light, and the special wells grip begins a connection from hand to fly that is smooth and comfortable and delivers on target with little thought or effort. Of course the 5-weight Avantt II also handles indicators and split-shot adroitly and has enough power down in the butt section to deliver longer casts or 2- and 3-inch streamer patterns if you need it.

The fast-action Avantt II rods are available in 11 different models—each model uses five different kinds of carbon fibers strategically positioned and aligned during the rolling process to produce specific performance characteristics.

Skwala Backeddy Wader

A fly angler wading along the edge of a river in Skwala waders.
$699 | skwalafishing.com

The Skwala Backeddy Wader is an everyday wader has a lot to offer with zippered pass-through kangaroo-style pockets that can haul cargo or serve as handwarmers. There is also a center top-loading zippered pocket on the exterior for essentials like tippet and clamps. For extra storage, the Backeddy has tube-style stretch mesh pockets along each ribcage. If dad’s the thirsty type, the pockets are about the right size for two cans of beer on each side, but fly boxes and water bottles fit there also.

The fully detachable shoulder straps make it easy to get in and out of the waders, and the magnetic closure snaps easily and securely into place. The G-hook size adjusters are flush inside the straps so there’s nothing to catch or rub inside your layers. The heat-set Y-shaped shoulder yoke sits right where it should, distributes the weight smoothly, and has a D-ring in the back for a net.

$8-11 (6-pack) | Various local sellers

Dads come in all varieties, but many share a love for beer. This Father's Day, ditch the tie and socks and give dad a gift that he can truly savor.

A good choice is 10 Barrel's new Pub Cerveza—a delicious easy-sippin' Mexican-style lager. It is an all-day-drinker with a light, crushable flavor profile that every dad can appreciate. According to the brewery, it's "the Spanglish brother to Pub Beer and Pub Ice," which are also great choices from 10 Barrel.

There are also many fantastic local beers nationwide that support water conservation and fisheries, which could be good choices as well. No matter dad's taste, it's hard to go wrong with a good beer.

Abel Rove Solid + Titanium Option

Studio photos of the front and back of an Abel Rove reel.
$745-$1,095 | abelreels.com

Abel has introduced a couple of new options for the Rove series including the Rove Solid and Rove Ti. The new-for-2024 Rove Solid has exactly the same sizes and prices as a regular Rove, but the frame side is completely solid; only the spool is ported. There is no laser-etched artwork on an exposed drag plate, but the solid frame provides a heavenly canvas for Casey Underwood artwork like “Tailing Bones,” Moondance,” “Slammin’,” “Mayfly Flurry,” and “Ridge Risers.”

The Casey Underwood etchings add $250 to the price of any Rove reel. The Rove Solid is also available in any of the Abel SDF solid finishes—like the flag finishes—as well as in custom handcrafted finishes like native brown trout, and artist/signature finishes like DeYoung Cutthroat Flank. The Rove Ti is a titanium upgrade ($500) of the counterweight, spindle, draw cap, draw rod, and draw ring from stainless steel to the element with atomic number 22.

St. Croix EVOS SALT Fly Rod

Studio photo of St. Croix EVOS SALT fly rod, with a best new saltwater fly rod badge.
$1,025 | stcroixfly.com

Consider the St. Croix EVOS SALT fly rod for the saltwater-addicted “old man.”

The new EVOS SALT has a very fast taper that is driven by a new proprietary carbon fiber matrix and MITO graphene technology that comes from a partnership with the company MITO Materials and is exclusive to St. Croix in the fly-fishing space. Graphene is a carbon allotrope, tightly bound in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice that is just one atom thick. Diamonds are also carbon allotropes, yet graphene is the strongest material ever discovered, with a tensile strength of 130,000,000,000 Pascals (or 130 gigapascals), compared to 400,000,000 for A36 structural steel. It covers line weights 6 through 12.

Scientific Anglers Magnitude Saltwater Fly Lines

Studio photo of Scientific Anglers fly line boxes.
$150 | scientificanglers.com

Scientific Anglers—the company that first introduced the world’s first floating, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) lines in 1952, and decades later began refining the lines for saltwater conditions—has in 2024 totally reimagined their offerings of tropical saltwater lines. These new Magnitude lines aren’t a mere alteration of a previous product, rather a completely new creation in the same way that the first breathable waders and the first graphite rods were fundamentally different from their predecessors.

One reason why they are clear or available with clear tips is because these new polymers don’t require an infusion of tiny glass spheres or bubbles for buoyancy. The clear polymers float all on their own. Clarity is a very obvious stealth advantage in shallow, clear water where the fish are on high alert for anything that looks unusual. These clear lines make absurdly long leaders unnecessary, as the tip of the line is an extension of your leader.

Big Sky Cigars Mad Minnow Fly Box

The box includes 4 hand-rolled Mad Minnow cigars, described as a medium-plus smoke with cedar, baking spices, rye bread, and black pepper flavor notes. The box also comes with a beautiful, custom Big Sky engraved bamboo fly box that includes 8 hand-tied river-ready flies.

G.Loomis IMX Pro Short Spey

Studio photo of a G.Loomis spey rod.
$625 | gloomis.com

If dad seeks to perfect the art of spey fishing, consider getting him the G.Loomis IMX-PRO V2 Short Spey Fly Rod. It is a versatile and powerful tool designed for spey techniques on smaller rivers and tighter spaces.

This rod features a shorter length (typically 11'1") ideal for spey casting strokes on rivers with limited overhead clearance or when casting from a boat. The rod's progressive flex and medium-fast action provide exceptional power for long casts and effective line control, even in windy conditions. Made with high-quality materials, the IMX-PRO V2 Short Spey offers a comfortable feel that reduces fatigue during extended fishing sessions. And it is also suitable for nymphing and streamer fishing techniques, making it a valuable addition to Dad's fly fishing arsenal.
