Montana Fly Company sold to Colorado fly shop owner

Founder Adam Trina plans to stay on as company president.

Montana Fly Company sold to Colorado fly shop owner

Montana Fly Company founder Adam Trina Friday morning announced the sale of MFC to Golden Fly Shop owner Justin Nine in Golden, Colorado.

“Naturally I’ve fished MFC flies for a really long time so I was excited to partner with these guys,” Nine said via phone Friday afternoon. “I think they make the best streamers in the game and other flies as well so I think it’s a good fit, coming from the retail side of the industry.” Golden Fly Shop is famous for its “Streamer Wall,” which will likely get bigger with this acquisition.

The shop and fly manufacturing brand are expected to remain separate companies.

“I have a good team on both fronts so I don’t have to be one place or the other,” Nine said. “But I definitely want to be more hands-on on the MFC side of things… Eventually, I’d like to spend more time in Montana and help those guys grow the brand.”

Trina plans to stay on at MFC as President and there are no immediate plans to relocate the company headquarters and distribution center from Columbia Falls, Montana. He founded MFC in 1999 and has grown the company into a major worldwide fly distributor. MFC lays claim to hundreds of fly patterns, including some designed by Kelly Galloup and Rich Strolis, and has patterns for stillwater, saltwater, warmwater, steelhead, trout, bass, carp, and more. It also sells branded accessories, apparel, and gifts.

“I’m excited to be part of the team and to help these guys continue to grow,” Nine said. “I think we’ll do some really exciting things in the industry.”
