Right now the annual tarpon migration is in full swing. Calm, warm days offer anglers with early dawn patrol fly fishing opportunities.
Tarpon are nocturnal feeders so getting to the flats before sun up, fly anglers can get into some great action.
Usually the earlier in the morning you go the darker the fly you want to throw. The dark color of this purple Poon Tanger Banger contrasts well in the low light and the bunny strip tail ungulates in the water to tease the poons into an aggressive bite increasing the hook up ratio.
Many other dark colored flies work well also. Black, purple, and dark brown seem to work best. So bring some of your favorite poon flies in dark colors the next time you head out early and you might be glad you did.
