Review: Simms G3 Jacket

Simms unveiled its new, updated G3 Waders in the spring of 2022, and because it was also the 20th anniversary of Simms’ most popular wader, perhaps the arrival of the new G3 Guide Jacket at about the same time didn’t immediately get the same level of attention. That’s a shame, because like the waders, this jacket is a radical improvement over its G3 predecessor.

The biggest change in the waterproof, breathable G3 Guide Jacket is that it’s built using 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell, with 3-layer Gore-Tex Stretch fabric in the shoulders and upper back area. That 4-way stretch material allows the jacket to move with you when you are casting, rowing, or pulling the anchor, and makes it more comfortable for all-day fishing.

Of course, the G3 Guide Jacket has tons of storage, so you don’t need to wear a pack or vest on top. It’s got two oversized water-resistant chest pockets with bellows. The right pocket has a fly field and a hidden retractor docking station, and the left pocket comes with a tethered sunglasses chamois.

There are two zippered handwarmer pockets, and inside the jacket there are both a zippered stash pocket and a stretch woven drop-in pocket.

The watertight shingle cuff has a tight adjustable strap to seal the wrist area, and then the Gore-Tex cuff extends over the top.

The oversized 3-point adjustable hood secures over top of your hat and stays put even in wind and rough boat rides, and is designed with a high-vis panel so people can find you should you end up in the water.
