Even though Scientific Anglers paper-based leader envelopes are completely biodegradable, one leader in one envelope still seems wasteful. After all, when you purchase a leader at a fly shop, your next step is to throw the envelope away. That’s why Scientific Anglers developed a bulk leader display you’ll see at fly shops in the spring of 2021. The leaders come to retailers in bulk display boxes (100 in a box), and fly fishers can pick and choose as many “naked” leaders as they want, and store them in their own reusable leader wallet, or even grab a single-use leader envelope from the display if they choose.
“The team at Scientific Anglers is continuously looking for ways to enhance our customers’ time on the water while reducing our environmental footprint,” said Scientific Anglers President Brad Befus. “In 2018 we had focused on eliminating the plastic bags and sleeves that our tapered leaders were formerly packaged in. This led us to the introduction of our 100% recyclable paper-based packaging. At the same time, we kept thinking that there could still be a better way to reduce the number of single-use tapered leader packages. It became increasingly clear that tapered leaders are highly consumable and could easily be sold in a bulk display, much in the same way flies are sold in fly shops and sporting goods stores around the world.”
The display holds 7.5' and 9' nylon monofilament Absolute Trout leaders from 2X through 6X for $4.95. The Absolute Leader Wallet ($14.95, scientificanglers.com ) has ten reusable zip-close plastic sleeves.
