More than a dozen vehicles at fishing access sites along the Madison River had their tires slashed on the morning of Wednesday, July 14. The vandals struck at a time when water temperatures on the Madison were reaching unfishable temperatures in the late afternoons. On July 21, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks enacted “hoot owl restrictions” on the Madison, which means no fishing is permitted between 2 p.m. and midnight.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the crimes were all committed on the upper Madison at fishing access sites south of Ennis between Lyons Bridge and the Palisades Recreation Area. Some vehicles had out-of-state plates, and some of the vehicles were local guides with clients.

The Madison is Montana’s busiest fly-fishing river, often topping more than 200,000 angler days annually in recent years.
